Handling Marriages [Legacy]

Whenever a couple gets married, there are a few housekeeping items that need to take place. Namely, moving them into the same household and updating any names or other data that need to be changed. You can start by answering the following two questions:

» Do the people getting married already have a Person records in your database?

If the Person records already exist, do not create new ones. This will only duplicate the records and add confusion to the process. Instead, move them into a Household record together.

» Does either party already have a Household by themselves?

If they do, you will need to decide which household record to keep. If they are moving into one of their houses, you will want to keep the Household record that already contains the address information. If they are both moving out and into a new house, first create a new Household record.

Note: If one or both of these people have contributions in the database then you will need to make the necessary changes in the Contributions module. The steps involved will be covered in the Contributions Manual.

  1. Go into Membership and from the menu bar select Records, then Households, and then Grid. Create a Household for the couple. If a Household already exists, you can skip this step. Close the Household Grid.
  2. Next, go to the Person Grid by selecting Records, then People, and then Grid. Find each member of the couple. If you cannot find a person, you may need to create a Person record for them. Be sure that you do not create duplicate records. If one member of the couple does not already reside in the household, find that person and highlight their record and follow the steps on the page for “Moving Out of a Household.” Do this for the other person in the couple, if necessary.
  3. At this point, you will need to make sure that all the data is correct. Go to the Household record and make sure the label names and household type are both correct. Go to each of their Person records and add the marriage date along with the spouse’s name on the personal/ family tab. Make any other changes that need to be made such as the last name.

  • I have done this many times, but the only problem is, the daughters of a family are 'lost' from the parents' records. We have had a family w/ 4 daughters and when they got married, the parents' records did not include any past information that they had 4 daughters. Again, notes could be added, but a way to include in the parents' file historically would be nice.
